Pololu & Honokane Nui Valley

View from atop Pololu

A few weekends ago we drove up along the Kona & Kohala coasts all the way around the north point of the island to the edge of the Hamakua coast. This northeast side of this island receives the most rain and is characterized by dramatic valleys that plunge into the ocean, as well as numerous creeks, rivers and waterfalls. It is a beautiful, lush and very wet place. We stopped at road end at Pololu valley where we got a sweet view of several other valleys along the coast with cliffs diving into the ocean. Not sure if you can tell by the pictures, but these were the most massive cliffs I've ever seen. Wow!!

We hiked down into Pololu valley, up the next ridge and down to the next valley, Honokane Nui. There was nothing but the raging open ocean to the north, and off in the distance we could see several waterfalls cascading down the sides of the valleys. Another amazing day!! The bottom three pictures are views from Pololu and within Pololu. The top four pics are of Honokane Nui.

Surf Days

Our farmer, Douglas, took us out body boarding early this week. After watching Allison ride a few waves and seeing the look of pure joy on her face he looks at me as we wait for the next set to come in and says "I had no idea" meaning he had no idea what a water baby Allison is. He's taken us out surfing everyday before work since. Now we're really on Hawaii time. On our part, we (Allison too if you can believe it) realized the advantage to waking up at the crack of dawn...no tourist in the water. The pictures are not of our morning surf safaris, but of a weekend beach day...so there are tourist, and I never got a picture of Allison riding a good wave, but you can at least see the "determined look" as Douglas called it, that Allison gets right as she's about to catch a wave. Me, on the other hand....I been loving body surfing, but I kind of look like I'm drowning doing it (even though I always come out laughing), so no pictures.
